Visual Dynamics Labs I: Venice

Black Care and the Infrastructures of Global Art

Research platforms exploring global art infrastructures, Black artistic practice, and transnational cultural networks.

What to Expect

Research Lab, Field Study, Documentary Production, Symposium

❋ Research Lab

We blend guided moments, open exploration, and space to reflect—so the experience feels both focused and fluid.

❋ Field Study

Connection and presence in the site is a core part of the process. We learn just as much from the cultural context—of the site, the folks around us, and the food as from the formal content itself.

❋ Documentary production

Led by experienced guides —artists, activists, and scholars—who know how to hold space, encourage participation, and keep things moving with purpose.

❋ Symposium

Our events prioritize care, repair, safety, and respect—so you can show up as you are and fully engage in the process.

Black Care and the Infrastructures of Global Art

May 6–9, 2026

Visual Dynamics Labs I is a research laboratory taking place during the press opening of the Venice Biennale.

The program brings together artists, scholars, curators, and cultural practitioners to examine how contemporary art circulates through global exhibition systems.

The Venice Biennale offers a powerful setting for this inquiry. Since its founding in 1895, the Biennale has shaped how artistic production is presented internationally through its system of national pavilions and large-scale curated exhibitions.

This research lab investigates how artists and institutions navigate these structures today.

Program Themes

The Venice lab focuses on several key questions shaping contemporary art.

Art Infrastructure

How large exhibitions and institutions organize artistic visibility and global cultural exchange.

Cultural Diplomacy

The role of national representation and geopolitical context within international art events.

Artist Mobility

How artists move through global networks of exhibitions, residencies, and institutions.

Black Care

Exploring care, solidarity, and relational ethics within artistic communities and institutions.

Program Structure

Participants engage in a series of activities during the four-day gathering.

  • Seminars and discussions

  • Field visits to exhibitions and pavilions

  • Artist and curator interviews

  • Collaborative research sessions

  • *(Optional) Documentary filming

  • Conversations

The program combines critical study with real-time making and collaborative exchange.
